About 138 Guitar Tech

My name is Robin, and I’m a guitar technician with a long-standing passion for music and instrument craftsmanship. I spent a decade working as a Senior Instrument Technician at The Banjo Works in Faversham, where I developed a deep and practical understanding of stringed instrument construction, setup, and repair. During my ten years there, I learned the importance of precision, patience, and consistency, as well as the art of listening to both the instrument and the musician. My role allowed me to work on a wide variety of instruments, from banjos and mandolins to acoustic and electric guitars, giving me a solid foundation in both traditional craftsmanship and modern repair techniques. It was also where I discovered the satisfaction that comes from restoring an instrument to its best possible condition and seeing the joy it brings to the player.

Throughout my time at The Banjo Works, I became highly skilled in diagnosing issues, carrying out detailed setups, and performing delicate repairs and restorations. I also developed a strong appreciation for the individuality of every instrument and the subtle differences that make each one unique. Working closely with musicians taught me the value of communication and understanding their playing styles, preferences, and goals. This helped me tailor my work to suit each player’s needs, whether that meant refining a guitar’s playability, improving its tone, or simply helping it feel more inspiring to play.

Building on that experience, I have since brought my skills and passion into the guitar world with 138 Guitar Tech. Here, I’ve been able to apply the same meticulous standards I developed at The Banjo Works, while expanding into more specialised guitar work. From fine-tuning setups for professional performers to carrying out intricate modifications and complete restorations, I approach every instrument with the same care and attention to detail. My goal is always to ensure that every guitar leaving my bench performs beautifully, feels comfortable, and inspires confidence in the player.

Alongside my technical work, music itself has always been at the heart of everything I do. I have a lifelong passion for playing guitar, discovering new music, and attending live shows whenever I can. Being part of the music community — whether in the workshop or in the audience — constantly reminds me why I love this work. The energy of live performance, the creativity of musicians, and the craftsmanship behind every great instrument all continue to inspire me to refine my skills and stay connected to the art of making music.

My journey as a guitar technician has been shaped by years of dedication to the craft, a deep respect for musical instruments, and a genuine appreciation for the people who play them. I take pride not just in the quality of my work, but in being part of a process that helps musicians bring their sound to life.
